IMOS - Units of Measure

Home > Data Center > Other > Units of Measure

Units of Measure in IMOS is a standardized way to record and display quantities for cargo, cargo groups, bunker, rates, and reporting. You can add or edit units as needed to match business requirements.

Fields and Options in Units of Measure

Field

Description

Code

Short identifier for the unit.

Description

Free-form text to clarify the unit's meaning or usage.

T (Type)

Measurement category:

Alt Code

Optional alternate code.

Conversion Factor

Numeric value for informational purposes only. Not used for automatic conversions in IMOS.

Note:

  • Code and Alt Code fields are limited to 3 characters

  • Conversion Factor is not used by IMOS for system-wide calculations or conversions. Conversions between units are handled within specific modules (e.g., cargo stowage factor, API gravity for liquids). Enter a value only if your workflow or reporting requires it for reference.

When adding or changing a UoM, review these areas:

  • Cargo & Estimates: Ensure the correct Type (Volume or Weight) is selected and that stowage or API/density data is set where needed.

  • Bunkers: Verify that the vessel fuel UoM matches the product (e.g., LNG should use M3, not MT). Changing a fuel UoM after it is in use may require technical assistance and can affect historical records.

Once a unit is in use (e.g., referenced in contracts or voyages), some fields may become read-only.

FAQs:

Q: Do I need to enter a conversion factor when adding a new UoM?
A: No. The field is not used by IMOS for calculations. Leave it blank unless required for reporting purpose.

Q: How does IMOS convert between M3 and MT?
A: Dry cargo uses the stowage factor; liquid cargo uses API gravity. These are set on the cargo, not in the UoM table.

Q: Can I change a unit's code or type after it is in use?
A: Not directly. Once a unit is referenced in the system, changes may require technical support and can impact historical records.

Q: What if I need a unit not listed in the default options?
A: You can add custom units in the Data Center as needed, following the field guidelines above.

Q: My Alt Lift Unit isn’t defaulting—why?
A: This is unrelated to the UoM table. Check flag CFGEnableAltLiftUnit in Cargo Groups for more details.
